The power of the mind is incredible, but for too long our culture has ignored it. You can use the power of your mind to help with your goal to lose weight. How does this work? Does this work at all?

Meditation is the state of increased awareness. Your mind is free from worries and concerns. You can enter a meditative state by concentrating on your breathing, by watching birds fly or water flow. Really anything that allows your mind to be quieted and more aware is conducive to meditation. So how does sitting still help you lose weight?

Most of the weight loss process is in your mind. You know this because it is what sabotages diets or exercise programs. Inertia or lack of motivation come from your mind. Overeating and other poor eating habits are ingrained in your mind. You may eat for comfort, to relieve sadness or loneliness, to deal with stress or anger. This may be the reason you are overweight. Your body can lose weight; it’s your mind that has to do a lot of the work to get you there.

Meditation works for weight loss in a few different ways. First, it strengthens the mind. Just as you work various parts of your body, you need to work on your mental strength as well. Meditation can help you pay more attention to what you are doing – which can help cut down on excessive eating or eating from boredom. Second, it helps you get food off your mind. If you can train yourself to use meditation for relieving anger, stress, or any other negative emotions, you won’t be as likely to reach for the chocolate ice cream or potato chips.

Make an effort to meditate for ten minutes every day. Set aside some special time in a quiet place for this. No matter how busy you are, you can carve ten minutes out, especially for something as important and beneficial as meditation. Not only will you feel better in your spirit, your body will also start changing. In this way, quick weight loss starts from the inside out.
