“We must become the change we want to see.”
Ghandi - Living Biographies of Religious Leaders
You wouldn’t go to a job interview in your sweatpants and stained t-shirt. You wouldn’t meet your future in-laws wearing your old ratty pajamas. Why is working out different? We all know that dressing well can help us feel better. If you have an important meeting, you wear your power suit that helps you look and feel like a professional. If you have a date, you dress to show off your style. How can clothes help your workout as well?
Sometimes it’s hard to be motivated. It’s hard to get up off the couch and go for a walk or drive all the way to the gym. It’s easy to just say “I’ll do it tomorrow”. Any tool that you can use to get yourself excited about exercising is worth trying. Usually, when you think about your workout equipment, you think about weights, treadmills, bikes, and footwear. Clothes are often an afterthought, but they can be enormously effective in helping us get off our butts.
For a lot of people, getting dressed makes action seem more possible. For instance, if you sit around in your PJs all day, it is hard to even get up to do chores. If you change into some jeans and a shirt, you can tackle your to-do list. The same is true for working out. If you can change into the clothes, working out seems more doable. Lacing up your sneakers gets you motivated to take a walk or jog. Getting your mind to accept the fact that you’re going to workout is the first hurdle. If your mind leads, your body will follow.
Another way clothing can help your workouts is as a reward. Instead of treating yourself with food when you accomplish a goal (which is counterproductive when trying to lose weight), treat yourself to a new piece of workout clothing. A bright red shirt can help you feel faster and more energetic. Some sleek new pants (maybe in a smaller size?) can motivate you to go harder and faster. Don’t neglect your feet: try a new pair of sneakers and your feet will be happy with the change.
Exercising is often hard for people because it gets to be too routine and too boring. Anything that you can do to spice things up is going to be helpful in reaching your goal. This could mean adding weights to your cardio routine, trying Pilates or yoga, walking faster, or getting an outfit that makes you feel slim and fit. Exercise will help you look good, so try looking good when you exercise.
